GCSE Maths & Sciences: revise with purpose.

A practical framework for deciding what to revise, turning knowledge into marks and avoiding the mistakes that repeatedly cost students.

Six habits that improve revision

Effective revision is active, spaced and linked to questions. Reading notes is useful for orientation, but it should not be the main activity.

1. Diagnose first

Complete a mixed set of questions, mark it carefully and rank topics as secure, developing or priority.

2. Retrieve from memory

Close the book and write what you know, then compare it with the specification or notes.

3. Practise by topic

Build accuracy on one skill before moving to mixed and unfamiliar exam questions.

4. Keep an error log

Record the mistake, why it happened, the correct method and one action that prevents a repeat.

5. Space your reviews

Return to a topic after a day, a week and several weeks instead of relying on one long session.

6. Explain aloud

If you cannot explain a method or process simply, identify the exact step that is not yet secure.

How to turn knowledge into marks

Underline command words and identify exactly what the question asks.
Show working in Maths and calculation questions, even when using a calculator.
Use values and trends from any data provided instead of giving a generic answer.
For practical questions, link each improvement to reliability, validity or accuracy.
Check units, conversions, signs and whether the final answer is reasonable.
Redo missed questions without notes several days later to prove the gap has closed.

A simple seven-day cycle

Days 1-2

Diagnose two priority topics. Review the underlying ideas and complete short topic sets.

Days 3-4

Mix those topics with earlier content. Mark immediately and update the error log.

Days 5-6

Complete timed exam sections. Practise deciding which method or scientific idea is needed.

Day 7

Redo errors from memory, summarise progress and choose the next week's priorities.
